[May 2012 Fearless Girl] -Carmel Seniors Photographer

It’s an honor to announce Makena as May’s Fearless Girl!!

This is a big week for this Carmel Senior…graduation is just days away!  Girl, get ready…because college is at least 10 times better than High School, if you can imagine that!  Makena is a future Bruin; yep, UCLA is one lucky campus to have a girl like her headed it’s way this fall!  She is attending UCLA with aspirations of becoming a dermatologist.  She has a passion for helping others stay healthy by taking care of their skin and themselves.  Makena would also like to give back to her community one day by opening a clinic to help those without insurance through a scholarship program based on need.  Girl, you are going to make a difference. I can just FEEL it!  And yes, I know what you’re thinking…yes, she IS the whole package, incredibly smart and an absolute stunner.  And she is a sweetheart on top of it!

Makena has been incredibly active during her few years at Carmel High School.  She jumped right into the swing of things by running for ASB Treasurer only 3 months after moving to Carmel during her Sophomore year.  This same year, she joined the cheer team.  Cheer has been an amazing experience for her and has forced her to be loud, bold, and confident.  I found it hard to believe when she claimed to be extremely shy…A girl that runs for an elected office only 3 months after starting a new school and takes up cheer is the sign of a BOLD and FEARLESS girl!!  You go girl!  I believe you have transitioned into a confident girl that is ready to take on this world!  This year, Makena had the honor of being the senior captain of the cheer team and was nominated as Most Valuable Cheerleader by her teammates.  And last year, she was chosen as an All-American by the Universal Cheerleaders Association.

Makena also has a compassionate heart.  She has volunteered for various local community events, but there is one organization that is near-and-dear to her heart,  Relay for Life.  Her dad is a cancer survivor.  And his experience has inspired her to help others going through the same thing.  My heart breaks to think of her family battling this disease together, but it also rejoices to know he is a survivor.  Because of this, every year she volunteers and helps in whatever capacity she can at the Relay for Life events.  Your heart is lined in gold…seriously.

Fearlessness to Makena…

Fearlessness smells like…The aura of the room as you take a deep breath.

Fearlessness looks like…An eager smile ready to tackle anything.

Fearlessness tastes like…Sips of water to keep you going.

Fearlessness sounds like…Animated cheers to a sometimes unrelenting crowd.

Fearlessness feels like…The seconds before performing when your mind becomes blank.

“The time I feel most fearless is when I take that first leap into uncharted territory.” -Makena

If I could give teen girls one piece of advice, I’d say…

“Stay true to yourself.

It’s easy to get sucked up into the drama and pressures of the world around you,

but remembering who you are and what you strive to stand for are some of the most important and grounding skills you can possess.”

I also love the fact that Makena was a part of the Link Crew program at school which focuses on making the freshman class feel welcome.  I love this because I did this too in high school…and met one of my BESTEST friends in the process.  And we are still BFFs to this day!

If you had one superpower, what would it be and why?

If I had one superpower, it would be the ability to freeze time.  I always feel like time never lasts long enough, so it would be pretty cool to be able to stop it, step back, and actually take it in.

If you could eat dinner with any person in the world, living or dead, who would it be and what one question would you ask?

George Washington.  I would ask him if, being a founding father, he agrees with the way America is run and the constitution is interpreted today.

What would you do in life if you knew you could never fail?
I would find a way to help rid the world of disease.

“The one thing I know for sure is no matter what stresses and struggles I face in life, I can always count on the love and support of my family to help me through it.”  -Makena

You will do amazing things Makena.  I wish you SUPER SUCCESS at UCLA.  Have a blast…and let me know when you start your dermatology practice one day! xoxo
