Don’t Let Others Define You

I just finished watching E! Investigation on bullying, and all I have to say is this…

The show highlights celebrities that were bullied as a child and what they went through. Sadly, bullying is an epidemic. Lisa Ling states that 160,000 students stay home every day because they are afraid of being bullied. This BREAKS MY HEART.

“YOU CAN’T GIVE PEOPLE PERMISSION TO WRECK YOUR LIFE.” –Former President Bill Clinton

Sadly, it’s a fact of life that we will all probably be bullied at one time or another so it’s important to educate ourselves on the issue.  Most bullies suffer from major insecurities; they make themselves feel better by pulling others down.  I believe a lot of times it stems from jealousy.

DON’T LET OTHERS DEFINE YOU.

I will never forget my friend, Shannon, dropping her children off at school.  She looked at her oldest son and said to him as he walked away, “Remember, walk with purpose.”  Those three words say so much.  If you walk with purpose, you are less apt to be picked on or bullied.  Walk taller, with your head up…don’t be looking down at the ground when you walk by someone…THEY DON’T DEFINE YOU.  Have determination in your presence.  Walking with purpose and being engaged in your surroundings not only boosts your confidence, but it also sends the message to others that you believe in yourself.

BE THE CHANGE.

The Bully Project has a great page on how YOU can make change at your own school.  Bring some of these ideas to the administrators at your school.  It’s time to not ignore this issue.  And while being a part of the change, you might just change someone’s life…and that right there is totally worth it.
