Okay girls, I have to share a secret…and it’s the secret formula to a good ‘ole fashioned handshake. You only get one first impression when meeting people, so let’s make it a positive one!
There is nothing better than a solid handshake when meeting someone for the first time. Social media may have possibly even made this art-form more difficult for us to master; we finally see someone in-person and don’t quite know how to introduce ourselves properly. It’s very simple, so I’m going to give you the run down. As you enter the real world, a good handshake will make you memorable. And hello…who doesn’t want that?!
Michelle’s Formula to a Solid Handshake:
- As my parents taught me, “NO SLOPPY NOODLES!” I not going to lie. If I shake someone’s hand and it’s like a limp noodle, I must confess…I judge. Instantly, I assume you are someone that lacks confidence. May not be true, but it will totally change your first impression of someone. No sloppy noodles! Shake with purpose; like you are truly excited to meet this person. Be engaged. Have a solid grip and give them a shake!
- Make eye contact. Once again, this shows confidence and that you are actively engaged.
- Make it a point to shake someone’s hand. If you are meeting someone for the first time, don’t be afraid to stick your hand out first.
- Practice. Sounds silly, but it’s not. You are/will be going to job interviews and networking with people as you get older. It’s important to have a solid first impression filled with confidence. This is a simple skill that will last a lifetime.
