SAT Tip: Adding and Subtracting Fractions

I learned the coolest trick, and it is too awesome to not share with you all!  So this is my tip to help you with the math portion of the SAT’s so you aren’t finding the need to make a cute design on the scan-tron!  Just kidding…I totally get that you are way beyond fractions, but everyone needs to know this trick!  And seriously, who wouldn’t want to draw butterflies as a part of the SAT’s?!

Let me introduce you to Butterfly Math for Fractions…Check this out, it works for any fractions you want to add or subtract:

Step One:

Make wings!  Draw the circles, and multiply those two numbers and write the answer above!  (If you want to get fancy, you can draw little antennae and write the answers there!)

Step Two:

Make the body of the butterfly by multiplying the two denominators and writing the answer below.

Step Three:  Getting the answer…

Add the two numbers across the top that you wrote down and that is the numerator for your answer.

Pull the answer across from when you multiplied the two denominators when making the body; this is the denominator for your answer.

BAM…you have your answer!

Step Four: Simplify

Fun Fact: I used to be a 4th grade teacher! 😉
